Elderflower Citrus Spritz: A Refreshing Drink with European Roots

Light, floral, and citrusy — this elderflower spritz is the perfect summer refreshment with a European touch.

The spritz began in 19th-century northern Italy when Austro-Hungarian soldiers diluted local wine with sparkling water. At the same time, elderflower syrup was a beloved drink ingredient across Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. This recipe unites both legacies into a sparkling, floral drink perfect for warm days.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

  • 100 ml elderflower syrup

  • 200 ml sparkling water

  • 200 ml dry white or sparkling wine (Prosecco or Cava)

  • 1 slice orange

  • 1 slice lemon

  • Ice cubes

  • Fresh mint leaves

Instructions:

  1. Fill two glasses with ice.

  2. Add 50 ml of elderflower syrup to each glass.

  3. Pour in 100 ml wine and 100 ml sparkling water.

  4. Garnish with citrus slices and mint.

  5. Serve cold and enjoy.
